I Saw a Shadow

I saw a shadow moving over the land
And I knew that one of the low clouds in the blue of the sky
Was drifting between the shadow and the Sun.

I saw a shadow moving over the land
But where I was the Sun shone;
What god was there casting a shade?

I thought, what if I were in that shadow
And not under the Sun, would it be strange
To be there in a shadow land?

I thought, how dark the land looks there
But only because of the clear light this afternoon
Making the field bright where there is no shadow.

I felt a shadow then wrap itself around me
In the clear light of my understanding
Making my mind dark to the god’s shade.

I felt a light then diffusing the darkness
Its beams shining in the lit compartments
Where no god casts a shadow.
