Waite Fortitutde
Rider-Waite Tarot - Pamela Colman Smith

Here she opens, but on some packs closes,
the lion’s mouth;  and so interpretations:
Quelling ferocity, the passions, the World’s powers
or releasing dark forces under her control.

Fortitude, after all, is a virtue
which she embodies, her heavy clothes
and floppy hat enclosing her power
like some governess ruling an unruly child.

Or virtuous strength with a floral crown
and a hat that has become Infinity
Subduing with a wreath of flowers
Wildness which she constrains to yield.

She it is who can teach us to conquer fear,
take hold of life with both hands;
To shape a destiny out of resisting clay
as she shapes the jaws of her rampant beast.

A.E. Waite calls the card 'Strength' and places it as number eight in the sequence, interchanging it with 'Justice'.
